Definition

An LVT calculator works out how many boxes or planks of luxury vinyl tile you need for a room, including waste and expansion gaps.

Explanation

LVT is sold in boxes with a fixed coverage (often 2–2.5 m²). Glue-down and click systems both need expansion gaps at walls. Diagonal or herringbone layouts increase waste.

Advantages

  • Fast box-count for quotes
  • Supports click and glue-down specs
  • Includes pattern waste premiums

Disadvantages

  • Does not replace a full floor plan for multi-room jobs

Worked example

A 3.5m × 4.2m kitchen (14.7 m²) with 10% waste needs 16.2 m². At 2.19 m² per box that is 8 boxes of click LVT.

Summary

Calculate LVT quantities with waste before ordering — round up to full boxes every time.

Subfloor flatness drives success

LVT telegraphs humps and dips. Most manufacturers allow around 3mm variation over 2 metres — anything more needs levelling compound or grinding first.

On fresh screed, moisture testing is non-negotiable. A beautiful click floor that lifts at edges after six weeks is almost always moisture or flatness, not faulty planks.

Acclimatise and dry-lay

Bring packs into the room 48 hours before fitting. Dry-lay two or three rows to check pattern, colour batch, and layout — especially around doorways where you may need to back-cut the first row.

Work from the main light source when possible so any subtle variation runs away from the window rather than across it.
