Definition

A margin calculator converts trade cost into retail price at your target margin.

Explanation

Margin is on selling price, not cost. A 40% margin means 40% of the invoice is gross profit before overheads.

Worked example

Material cost £28/m² with 40% margin → sell price £46.67/m² (cost ÷ (1 − 0.40)).

Summary

Set default margins in PlanCutFit catalog settings and adjust per product line.

Margin vs markup — getting the maths right

Why margin is on sell price

A 40% margin means 40% of the invoice is gross profit — not 40% added on top of cost. Confusing margin with markup is the most common pricing error new flooring businesses make.

Sell price = cost ÷ (1 − margin%). At 40% margin, £28 cost sells at £46.67, not £39.20.

Default margins in catalog

Set category defaults in PlanCutFit (carpet, LVT, trim) then override on luxury lines. When supplier costs rise, use maintain-margin rules so retail prices update consistently.

Frequently asked questions

Margin vs markup?
Margin is profit as a % of sell price. Markup is profit as a % of cost — do not mix them.
