Straight flights vs winders
Straight flights use tread depth plus riser height multiplied by step count, then multiplied by stair width. Winders and kite steps need individual templates — never average them into a rectangle.
Bullnose bottom steps wrap over the nosing and need extra length. Patterned carpet on stairs is slower and wasteful; plain or semi-plain is easier to fit well.
Runners vs full width
A runner uses less carpet but needs secure fixing with rods or gripper on each tread. Full-width stair carpet gives a plush finish but increases material and labour.
