Definition
A carpet fitting price calculator (or flooring labour cost calculator) works out the labour side of a quote: what you charge to fit, separate from the cost of the carpet or flooring.
Explanation
Most UK fitters charge per square metre for floors and per step for stairs, with extras for taking up and disposing of old flooring, moving furniture, trimming doors and preparing the subfloor. The useful check is the day rate: divide the labour by the days you will be on site and compare it with what you need to earn after van, fuel and tools.
Advantages
- Stops small extras being given away
- Shows the real day rate of a job
- Separates labour from materials on the quote
Worked example
40 m² at £6/m², 13 stairs at £8 a step, £1.50/m² uplift and £30 extras = £434 labour, £520.80 with VAT, about 1.5 days on site.
Examples
- Bedroom and landing, 18 m² at £6/m² with 4 steps at £8 = £140 labour, about a day on site.
- Whole house, 65 m² at £6/m² plus a 13-step flight at £8 and uplift at £1.50/m² = £591.50 labour, about 2 days.
Summary
Price from the day rate you need, not just the going rate. PlanCutFit puts your fitting rates on every quote and shows the profit on the whole job before you send it.
Frequently asked questions
- How much should I charge to fit carpet per m²?
- Rates vary by region, carpet type and how much prep is involved. Work back from the day rate you need: if you fit 40 m² a day and need £250 a day, you need about £6.25/m² before extras.
- Should stairs be priced per step?
- Yes, most fitters price stairs per step, with winders and bullnose steps at a higher rate because they take longer.
